Collection Worker Trainee

The Cayucos Sanitary District invites applications for a Collection Worker Trainee to become part of our team.

At the time of hire, the employee must live within 30 minutes travel time of Cayucos for emergency response and standby duty.

Job Description: Wastewater Collection System Workers 

The Collection unit services and maintains the sanitary sewer system throughout the community of Cayucos. The Trainee position is the initial step of the Collection Worker career pathway. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities: The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.

  • Trained to participate in the preventive maintenance routine, repair, and construction related to a sewer collection and conveyance system, including lift/pump stations, sewer lines, pumps, motors, valves, telemetry and control systems.       
  • Trained to operate and maintain a variety of hand tools and equipment utilized in the maintenance and operation of a sewer collection and conveyance system.
  • Assists in scheduled cleaning of sewer collection system trouble-spot areas and preventive maintenance; reports the status of the sewer collection and conveyance system and related activities to the immediate supervisor.
  • Assists in replacing broken lines, raising manholes and lamp holes; assists in implementing sewer inflow and infiltration reduction measures.
  • Trained to perform maintenance and operation activities in conformance with established policies, procedures, and standards established by the District and Cal OSHA.
  •  Assists in setting up metering devices at determined locations; collects data used to meter and monitor flows.
  • Assists with diagnostic procedures and troubleshooting to detect sewer collection and conveyance system operational problems, and in taking recommended corrective action.
  • Keeps records of daily maintenance and operations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements & Qualifications 

Minimum Requirements: 

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Intermediate computer literacy including a basic knowledge of programs such as Excel, Word, Outlook and database programs.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver’s license, must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record, and must be insurable to operate District vehicles.
  • Must possess the ability to obtain a Grade I Collection System Maintenance Certificate issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board to advance beyond the Trainee level.
  • Once an acceptable level of experience is achieved, must participate in on-call rotation and have the ability to respond to emergency events within 30 minutes. 
  • The position is full-time with normal operating hours of Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Desirable Qualifications: 

  • Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in the maintenance and operation of a sewer collection and conveyance system.
Compensation & Benefits 

The compensation range for this PERS-eligible position is $22.06 to $28.16 per hour ($45,884.80 to $58,572.80 annually) depending on the level of experience and the step at which one is hired.  

The District offers a competitive benefits package which includes PERS retirement and employer-paid premiums for health, dental and vision coverages along with paid vacation, holidays and sick leave.  

  • PERS Retirement – 2% at 62 for eligible PEPRA employees; 2.5% at 55 for pre-PEPRA members.
  • Healthcare – The District contributes 100% of premiums for the employee and one dependent for medical, dental and vision coverages. 
  • Leave benefits (subject to District policy) include 10 paid holidays, 10 vacation days (increasing with longevity), 2 personal days, and 12 sick days annually.
  • Voluntary participation in 457 Deferred Compensation Plan.
  • Voluntary participation in Colonial Life (disability, life, etc.) employee insurance plan.
